Percy Harvin an Early Biletnikoff Contender

The Biletnikoff Award is given to college football’s most outstanding wide receiver. In 2007, the award was present to Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree. This year, the Bleacher Report is putting Percy Harvin’s name up on the list as a potential winner. Of course he’ll be up against some stiff competition in Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin.

Last year, Percy didn’t have a good shot at winning the award because he was utilized heavily as a running back. If Meyer is true to his word and Harvin doesn’t carry the ball as much in 2008, that will open him up for more involvement in the passing game. Harvin is a very fast, deep threat receiver. He has potential to get 1400+ receiving yards and double-digit touchdowns if he stays healthy. And with the nation’s best quarterback, Tim Tebow, throwing him the ball, Percy could also push close 100 receptions.

It will take a magical, healthy year for Percy Harvin to win the Biletnikoff in 2008, but it’s nice to see him getting national attention at the wide receiver position.

HE1SMAN

If you’re a college football fan, then last year during the Heisman race you probably saw a lot of HE15MAN signs everywhere you looked. Tim Tebow popularized this because his jersey number (#15) fit so nicely in the Heisman name by replacing the letters “is”.

Browse some Gator Forums and you will see that a lot of Percy Harvin fans are already getting the HE1SMAN campaign going. They’ve replaced the “i” in Heisman with Percy’s jersey number (#1).

It will be interesting to watch Gator games this year and see how many fans are wearing HE15MAN vs. how many fans are wearing HE1SMAN. Percy Harvin would have to have a Reggie Bush (2005) type season in order to win the Heisman. It’s certainly possible considering he is featured in all aspects of the Gator offense. We’ll likely see HE1SMAN t-shirts, signs, license plates and everything else you can think of. I can’t wait for football season to start!

How to stop Percy Harvin

This is one of the most difficult questions to answer in all of college football. Opposing coaches brainstorm for weeks in advance on how to stop the nightmare that is Percy Harvin. How do you stop the fastest man on the field that can line up as a wide receiver or take snaps out of the backfield. Can you put a linebacker on him? Do you have to double team him? What can opposing teams do?

The answer is: not much! If Percy Harvin lines up in the backfield and the gators spread it out with 3 wide receivers, teams will be forced to use linebackers to cover Percy Harvin. That just won’t work. He’s shown countless times how he burns right by them. That’s the beauty of the spread offense.

So what happens if opposing teams put corner backs on him? Well, you’ll pretty much get the same results. Percy can use his agility and speed to out maneuver any defensive back and do some heavy damage in the open field.

The best defense against Percy is to jam him on the line of scrimmage and force him off track. By being physical with him up front that can delay the timing of a route by just a few seconds. There’s really nothing else you can do… except maybe pray?

Percy Harvin and Reggie Bush Comparisons

Let’s make it clear that when we talk about comparisons between Percy Harvin and Reggie Bush, we’re talking about what they’ve done on the field in the NCAA. In no way are we implying that Percy will be mixed up with legal troubles and accusations of NCAA violations.

Someone with the Bleacher Report wrote a nice little article about Percy Harvin and Reggie Bush. The article starts out saying Percy is the next Reggie, just America doesn’t know it yet. And by the next Reggie, they mean a badass WR/RB combo that possesses all the skills necessary to be an absolute star. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

A guy who was listed as the nation’s number one prep player in 2006 by Rivals.com (Bush was their number two ranked player coming out of high school in 2003).

A guy who, through two seasons, gained more yards from scrimmage on fewer touches than Bush did in his first two seasons.

Reggie got you 7.7 yards per touch. Percy got you 11.3, and did it against tougher defenses.

While he has a penchant for making gamebreaking, nearly impossible plays, his best asset may be his final burst at the point of contact, almost as if he can see the yellow first down line on the field.

Percy Harvin is a very dynamic player. He is used in the running back and wide receiver positions. He’s also one of the fastest players in the country and no one, other then Percy, has the ability to take it to the house anytime he touches the ball. That’s why this sequence of pictures taken during a Percy Harvin touchdown is so special. You have to have one hell of a camera lens to capture all of this. Check it out:
