This is one of the most difficult questions to answer in all of college football. Opposing coaches brainstorm for weeks in advance on how to stop the nightmare that is Percy Harvin. How do you stop the fastest man on the field that can line up as a wide receiver or take snaps out of the backfield. Can you put a linebacker on him? Do you have to double team him? What can opposing teams do?
The answer is: not much! If Percy Harvin lines up in the backfield and the gators spread it out with 3 wide receivers, teams will be forced to use linebackers to cover Percy Harvin. That just won’t work. He’s shown countless times how he burns right by them. That’s the beauty of the spread offense.
So what happens if opposing teams put corner backs on him? Well, you’ll pretty much get the same results. Percy can use his agility and speed to out maneuver any defensive back and do some heavy damage in the open field.
The best defense against Percy is to jam him on the line of scrimmage and force him off track. By being physical with him up front that can delay the timing of a route by just a few seconds. There’s really nothing else you can do… except maybe pray?
Hey! Just wanted to let you know that I really love this site. I’ve been a Percy fan since he was at Landstown, and I’m going to stay one until he goes pro. But yeah continue to keep us Harvin fans updated….
Don’t forget that defensive coordinators can put a “spy” on Harvin if he is in the backfield. This would work best with smaller yet faster linebackers.
Also, as I have previously mentioned, most elite NFL or college corners have a few pounds on Percy. However, his strength training has likely closed the gap.
you can’t stop him he is the fastest kid in the nation
He can play UGA, they already stopped him once.
Yeah, okay. In last year’s Georgia game, Harvin had 41 receiving yards and 97 rushing yards. On 10 carries. Nice job of stopping him, lol.
