Gator Pro Day Tomorrow

The University of Florida will host their annual Pro Day tomorrow. Percy Harvin will be participating in the drills. For some athletes, Pro Day is as important as the combine. Players are more in their comfort zone and can perform better. You also are not being watched by 500 people, including ESPN cameras. Only the scouts interested in what you have to offer will come visit for the Pro Day.

I’ll be sure to post Percy’s specifics tomorrow at the conclusion of the day. Check back!

Percy Harvin to the Patriots?

The University of Florida Pro Day is next Wednesday. Percy Harvin will participate and there will be dozens of NFL Scouts on hand to watch him. Whether Percy Harvin is drafted in the Top 10 or closer to the 25-30 range may depend on his performance.

The USA Today had a good write up on Percy. Check it out:

Florida wide receiver Percy Harvin hopes to hear his name called in the first round of the April 25-26 NFL draft. If it is, he owes thanks.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is close with Florida coach Urban Meyer and has studied Meyer’s spread-option offense firsthand.

Belichick gave some coaching pointers to Harvin, who scored 17 touchdowns on 110 touches last season.

“He’s been an inspiration to me,” Harvin says of Belichick. “I’ve talked to him several times. … He’s talked to me and told me what I need to work on. I think the world of him.”

NFL evaluators are impressed with Harvin, who ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine.

“He makes defensive coordinators anxious,” Buffalo Bills vice president of college scouting Tom Modrak says. “He’s a big-play possibility every time he touches the ball.”

Whom does Harvin compare his skill set with? “Reggie Bush has popped up, but a lot of people compare me to Steve Smith,” Harvin says of the Carolina Panthers wideout.

Percy Harvin: 2009 NFL Draft Preview

Posted by Harvin Zone | Posted in NFL | Posted on 05-03-2009

The folks over at Associated Content (might be some AP type of site) wrote a great Percy Harvin Draft Preview. As free agency is starting to die down, we can get a better look at what teams will be looking for a WR in the first round. Percy could potentially be taken as high as No. 7 overall with the Oakland Raiders. Many experts pegged Michael Crabtree as the No. 1 WR in the draft, but his stock has been dropping like a rock the past two weeks. Don’t be surprised if Percy is the first WR taken.

I’m going to post a quick excerpt from the preview, but you really should go check out the whole thing here.

Percy went to the University of Florida where he played both receiver and running back. He was such a dynamic threat that he caused opposing teams to prepare strategies specifically for stopping him – let alone Florida’s other weapons (i.e. Tim Tebow). He was part of two national championship teams, being a major factor in the second one. Despite battling injuries throughout his career, including what was later determined to be a hairline fracture, he was a strong player never afraid to take the hit. In the 2008-09 National Championship game, playing with that hairline fracture, he carried the ball 9 times for 122 yards rushing along with a touchdown. He also had 5 catches for 49 yards leading the Gators to their second National Championship.

Percy Harvin in the Top 10?

Posted by Harvin Zone | Posted in NFL | Posted on 02-03-2009

There hasn’t been talk of Percy Harvin going in the Top 10 of the NFL Draft since last year when he was a rising junior. Percy’s injuries have bumped him down a couple slots in the minds of most NFL scouts. However,
Raiders beat reporter Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee says he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Oakland used its first-round pick on Percy Harvin.

While 7th overall would seem high for Harvin, his speed undoubtedly will appeal to owner Al Davis. If the Raiders get their offensive tackle situation ironed out in free agency, wideout could be their top priority in the draft.

If Crabtree is off the board by the time the Raiders pick they’ll be more inclined to go WR. The only other option that high would be Jeremy Maclin, and he has injury concerns as well (he got wrecked up at the combine on a deep route).

Percy has all the tools to succeed at the NFL level. A lot of people are comparing him to Steve Smith and Wes Welker. Every team in the league would be happy grabbing a player like that with their first pick.

Percy Harvin at the NFL Combine

The NFL Combine wraps up tomorrow. Former Florida Gator Percy Harvin was there, hoping to improve his draft stock. A lot of mocks I’ve seen him him going late in the first round.

Harvin came in measured at 5-feet-11¾ and 194 pounds. On Sunday, he ran the 40 in 4.41 seconds, the sixth fastest time among 45 receivers at the combine (some clocks had him at 4.37 and 4.32). Harvin also bench-pressed 225 pounds 19 times, the fifth most among receivers.

Those are impressive numbers considering he’s still not 100% from his ankle innjury back in December.

“That’s why I’m going to take a little more time to run the routes at my pro day,” Harvin said. “(The ankle) swelled up a lot (after the championship game). The break hasn’t healed all the way so I can’t cut, but I can definitely run straight ahead.”

So where does Percy stand in the draft? If he entered as a running back, he would have posted the fastest time. There’s no question he can do multiple things on the field.

“A lot of teams want to know my durability and whether I can be a pure receiver,” Harvin said this week during the NFL Scouting Combine, which continues through Tuesday at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis.

“I’ll answer a lot of those questions on my pro day.”

The Gator Pro Day will be held on March 18, 2009.

Percy Harvin Signs With Agent

Percy Harvin recently signed with NFL Agent Joel Segal. Segal represents fellow Gators Alex Brown, Channing Crowder, Ceatrick Fason, Gerrard Warren and Ben Troupe.

The following is from Jeremy Fowler’s Swamp Things blog in the Orlando Sentinel.

“Former Gators wide receiver Percy Harvin looks to Joel Segal to negotiate his first NFL contract, according to the NFL Players Association records.

Harvin, projected by many as a first-rounder in April’s draft, will become the sixth Gator on Segal’s Blue Equity Sports roster. Segal is considered one of the NFL’s most aggressive agents along side Drew Rosenhaus.

Perhaps Segal can do for Harvin what he did with Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson, the former East Carolina star who jumped to the 24th pick in last year’s draft thanks to his athletic prowess. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Johnson rushed for 1,228 yards this season for the Titans.

Harvin, who declared after his junior season, is of a similar build and playmaking ability.”

Percy Harvin’s time as a Florida Gator is over. It’s now time to shift this website’s focus to his potential as an NFL athlete. We all know he has potential to be very special at the next level. He wouldn’t have come out early if he didn’t think so himself.

Below are the latest mock drafts and the positions they rank Percy. Over the next few weeks/months we’ll analyze this.

Draft Countdown – #30 – Tennessee Titans

New NFL Draft – #19 – Tampa Bay Bucs

Walter Football – #30 – Tennessee Titans

Draft King – #26 – Baltimore Ravens

As you can see, most of the mocks have him in the mid to late 1st round. Most have him as the 3rd or 4th WR taken off the board. I think these projects are pretty close to where he’ll fall. I could however see Percy jump up some boards after his workouts at the combine.

Percy Harvin To Enter NFL Draft

The Florida Gators got good news from quarterback Tim Tebow and star linebacker Brandon Spikes, but for the 2009 season, the Gators will have to do without their best playmaker. Percy Harvin announced today that he will leave the University of Florida and forgo his senior season for the NFL.

“Percy is the most dynamic player I’ve ever coached and can change the game on any given play,” said Meyer. “He has the best first step I’ve ever seen and his ability to plant his foot and go is unmatched. Percy is a relentless competitor who wants to win. We wish him the best of luck and we look forward to having him around our program. He will always be a part of our Gator football family.”

Harvin finishes his career as one of the most prolific offensive threats in school history. He totaled 133 catches for 1,929 yards and 13 touchdowns, while rushing the ball 194 times for 1,852 yards with 19 touchdowns. His 32 career touchdowns is the most ever by a UF wide receiver. He averaged an astounding 9.5 yards per carry and averaged 11.6 yards ever time he touched the ball. He is the only player in UF history to rush for 100 yards and have 100 yards receiving in the same game (Vanderbilt, 2007). Harvin was the MVP of the 2006 Southeastern Conference Championship Game as a true freshman.

In the coming months, this website will transform into a new design that reflects Percy’s career as an NFL player. No matter what team he lands on, we will follow him.

Best of luck Percy!

Percy Harvin Submits NFL Paperwork

Florida wide receiver Percy Harvin submitted his paperwork to have his draft position evaluated by the NFL Draft Advisory Committee. The deadline to submit paperwork to get an evaluation from the NFL Draft Advisory Committee is January 4. The committee, which consists of 30 NFL scouts, will determine the potential of each player who submits paperwork. The deadline to declare for the 2009 NFL Draft is January 15.

Harvin, one of the nation’s most versatile and dangerous all-purpose threats, is expected to be a first-round pick. Harvin leads the Gators with 595 receiving yards and is third behind Chris Rainey and Tebow with 538 rushing yards. He also leads the team with 16 total touchdowns (9 rushing, 7 receiving).

This shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone. We all knew the moment Percy put on a Gator uniform that his goal was to get to the NFL as quickly as possible. He has one more game left to showcase his ability to the NFL. He’s coming off an injury and will need to prove he’s healthy and able to play.

Percy Harvin Draft Stock

I’ll get more into this during the offseason, but I just wanted to show all of you where some of the “experts” have Percy Harvin going in the 2009 NFL Draft. And face it folks… Percy may only be a junior, but he’s not coming back to Florida for a senior year. There’s too much money on the line for first round picks.

NFL Draft Dog – 21st overall pick
Not huge at 5′ 11″ 184 pounds, but Harvin is a super talent and put up huge numbers in 2007 where he ran for 764 yards and 6 TDs and also caught 59 passes for 858 yards and 4 TDs.

Football Futures – 17th overall pick
There is no one on the roster that provides big play ability from the WR spot for the Jets. Harvin’s explosiveness would be a great fit out of the slot and give Brett Favre another weapon to make one last push before he hangs it up for good.

The Football Expert – 32nd overall pick
The Titans have failed to draft a receiver the past few years, even though they have lacked the playmaking receiver. But things may change with Harvin because Harvin has something the Titans seem to crave: speed. With 4.3 speed, Harvin fits the mold of previous first round picks Chris Henry and Chris Johnson. Harvin lacks ideal 5-11, 195 lbs, but definitely is a speed burner who has been used at RB at Florida. His major negative is he has had some injuries during college.

So you can see that Percy Harvin’s draft spot has a large range to it. If he continues to play well these final few games and manages to stay healthy, his draft stock will only go up. It will be fun to compare this post with more mock drafts as we get closer to April.
